The immediate trigger was the greased cartridges of the new Enfield rifle, but the revolt reflected deep-seated resentment against British economic exploitation, the Doctrine of Lapse, and cultural insensitivity. Mangal Pandey had fired the first shot at Barrackpore weeks earlier. The revolt spread across North India — from Kanpur under Nana Sahib to Jhansi under Rani Lakshmibai — before being brutally suppressed by 1858.

Queen Victoria's Proclamation of 1858 promised non-interference in religious matters, equal treatment under law, and respect for the rights of Indian princes. The Governor-General became the Viceroy. The Secretary of State for India and a 15-member council took charge in London. While the promises were largely hollow, this shift marked a new phase — the British Raj — that would last until 1947.

The Indian Councils Act of 1861 was the first step toward representative institutions in India. It expanded the Viceroy's council and allowed the appointment of non-official Indian members as nominees. While these members had no real power — they could only advise, not vote on budgets — it established the principle that Indians should have a voice in governance. This act also restored legislative powers to the Bombay and Madras Presidencies.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj in Bombay in 1875, advocating a return to Vedic principles while rejecting idol worship, caste rigidity, and child marriage. The movement promoted education through DAV (Dayanand Anglo-Vedic) schools and colleges. The Shuddhi movement sought to reconvert those who had left Hinduism. Arya Samaj became a powerful force in Punjab and North India, blending social reform with cultural nationalism.

Founded by A.O. Hume, a retired British civil servant, with the support of Dadabhai Naoroji, W.C. Bonnerjee, and others, the INC was initially a moderate body seeking greater Indian representation within the British system. The first session in Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College, Bombay, was presided over by W.C. Bonnerjee. The early Congress used petitions, resolutions, and constitutional methods — earning them the label "Moderates." But this platform would evolve into the primary vehicle of mass nationalism.

On September 11, 1893, Swami Vivekananda began his address at the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago with "Sisters and brothers of America" — receiving a standing ovation. He spoke of Hindu universalism, tolerance, and the acceptance of all religions as true. His speech gave Indians a new sense of pride in their civilizational heritage and challenged Western notions of Eastern inferiority. Vivekananda became a symbol of resurgent Hindu self-confidence and inspired a generation of nationalists.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the "Father of Indian Unrest," used festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Shivaji Jayanti to mobilize public sentiment. His newspapers Kesari (Marathi) and Mahratta (English) openly criticized British policies. Arrested in 1897 on charges of inciting disaffection after the assassination of the plague commissioner Walter Rand, Tilak declared "Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it." His trial and imprisonment galvanized the extremist wing of the Congress and shifted the movement from polite petitions to mass agitation.

Lord Curzon partitioned Bengal in October 1905, ostensibly for administrative efficiency, but the real motive was to divide the politically active Bengali Hindu and Muslim communities. The partition united Indians in fury — bonfires of British cloth lit up Calcutta, Rabindranath Tagore composed "Amar Sonar Bangla," and the Swadeshi movement promoted Indian-made goods. Boycott became a political weapon for the first time. The movement also birthed revolutionary nationalism, with groups like Anushilan Samiti and Jugantar emerging in Bengal.

Founded on December 30, 1906, at the All India Muhammadan Educational Conference in Dhaka, the Muslim League was established under the leadership of Nawab Salimullah and with the patronage of the Aga Khan. The League emerged partly as a response to the growing Congress movement, and partly due to British encouragement of separate Muslim political identity. Its founding goals included promoting loyalty to the British government and advancing Muslim political interests — setting the stage for the communal politics that would eventually lead to Partition.

At the 1907 Surat session, the Congress split into two factions. The Moderates, led by Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Pherozeshah Mehta, and Surendranath Banerjea, favored constitutional methods — petitions, prayers, and gradual reform. The Extremists, led by Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Bipin Chandra Pal (Lal-Bal-Pal), demanded Swaraj and advocated boycott, national education, and passive resistance. The split weakened the Congress for nearly a decade until the Lucknow Pact of 1916 reunited it.

The Morley-Minto Reforms (Indian Councils Act of 1909) increased the size of legislative councils and introduced elections for Indian members for the first time. However, their most consequential provision was the introduction of separate electorates for Muslims — meaning only Muslim voters could elect Muslim representatives. This institutionalized communal politics in Indian governance. While Minto and Morley intended to create a "safety valve" for Muslim demands, it deepened the Hindu-Muslim divide and laid the constitutional groundwork for Partition four decades later.

Gandhi landed in Bombay on January 9, 1915, already celebrated for his struggle against racial discrimination in South Africa. On Gokhale's advice, he spent a year traveling across India to understand its people and problems. He established the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and tested Satyagraha in local struggles — the Champaran movement (1917) against indigo planters, the Kheda Satyagraha (1918) for peasant tax relief, and the Ahmedabad mill strike. These experiments transformed him from a South African hero into Mahatma — a national leader.

The Rowlatt Act (March 1919) allowed the British to imprison Indians without trial — Gandhi called it "legislation designed to rob people of real freedom." On April 13, 1919 — the day of Baisakhi — Brigadier General Reginald Dyer ordered troops to fire on a peaceful gathering in the walled garden of Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. At least 379 were killed (Indian estimates range much higher) and over 1,200 wounded. The exits were blocked; there was no warning. Rabindranath Tagore returned his knighthood in protest. The massacre shattered any remaining Indian faith in British justice.

Launched in August 1920 with the support of the Khilafat movement (led by the Ali brothers — Shaukat Ali and Muhammad Ali), Non-Cooperation called for the surrender of titles, boycott of legislatures, courts, schools, and foreign goods, and the promotion of Swadeshi. Thousands of students left government schools, lawyers abandoned courts, and Indians returned British honors. Congress was reorganized from an elite body to a mass party with a new constitution. The movement brought Hindu-Muslim unity and made Congress a vehicle of popular protest for the first time.

On February 4, 1922, a procession at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur, UP, turned violent when police fired on protesters. The enraged mob set fire to the police station, killing 22 policemen. Gandhi, horrified that non-violence had been violated, unilaterally suspended the Non-Cooperation Movement on February 12. His decision was deeply controversial — leaders like Motilal Nehru, C.R. Das, and Subhas Chandra Bose felt the movement was at its peak and should not have been stopped. Gandhi was arrested in March 1922 and sentenced to six years (released in 1924).

The Simon Commission (1928), headed by Sir John Simon, was appointed to review the Government of India Act of 1919 — but had no Indian members. Indians across the political spectrum were outraged. Black-flag demonstrations greeted the commission at every stop with chants of "Simon Go Back." During a protest in Lahore, police brutally beat Lala Lajpat Rai, who died of his injuries weeks later — his death became a rallying cry. In response, Indians drafted the Nehru Report (1928) proposing dominion status, which was later rejected by the younger leaders who demanded complete independence.

At the historic Lahore session in December 1929, the Indian National Congress, presided over by the 40-year-old Jawaharlal Nehru, passed the Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) resolution — rejecting dominion status. On the banks of the Ravi river at midnight on December 31, 1929, Nehru unfurled the tricolor flag. January 26, 1930, was declared Independence Day and observed across India with pledges of freedom. This date was later chosen as Republic Day when the Constitution came into effect in 1950. The Lahore declaration set the stage for the Civil Disobedience Movement.

On March 12, 1930, Gandhi set out from Sabarmati Ashram with 78 followers on a 24-day, 385 km march to the coastal village of Dandi. On April 6, he picked up a fistful of salt, breaking the unjust British salt tax that affected every Indian household. The symbolic act electrified the nation — salt Satyagraha spread across India, with over 60,000 arrests. The Civil Disobedience Movement included boycott of foreign goods, no-tax campaigns, and forest Satyagrahas. Women participated in large numbers for the first time. The world press covered it extensively, building international sympathy for Indian independence.

The Gandhi-Irwin Pact (March 1931) was a remarkable moment — the leader of a mass movement negotiating directly with the Viceroy as an equal. The pact agreed to release political prisoners and allowed salt-making along coasts. Gandhi attended the Second Round Table Conference in London (September-December 1931) as Congress's sole representative. While it produced no major outcome, the image of Gandhi in his dhoti meeting the King at Buckingham Palace captured the world's imagination. When asked if he felt underdressed, Gandhi replied, "The King had enough on for both of us."

The Government of India Act of 1935 was a landmark constitutional document containing 321 sections and 10 schedules. It introduced provincial autonomy with elected Indian ministers responsible to provincial legislatures. It proposed an All-India Federation (never implemented) and abolished dyarchy at the provincial level. The Act created the Federal Court, introduced direct elections, and expanded the electorate to 35 million. While Congress rejected it as inadequate, many of its provisions — including the division of powers between center and provinces — influenced the Indian Constitution adopted in 1950.

The 1937 elections were a watershed moment. Congress won clear majorities in 5 provinces and formed governments in 8 — including the United Provinces, Bihar, the Central Provinces, Bombay, Madras, and Orissa. The Muslim League performed poorly, winning only 109 of 482 reserved Muslim seats. This humiliation led Jinnah to reassess his strategy — he began building the League as a mass party and sharpening his demand for Muslim political autonomy. The Congress provincial governments (1937-1939) implemented social reforms but their refusal to share power with the League deepened communal tensions.

At its Lahore session on March 23, 1940, the Muslim League passed a resolution (drafted by Sikandar Hayat Khan, moved by Fazlul Huq) demanding that "geographically contiguous units" where Muslims were in a majority should be grouped to constitute "independent states" with autonomous and sovereign governance. While the word "Pakistan" was not used in the resolution, the idea — coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali in 1933 — became the League's rallying cry. Jinnah argued that Hindus and Muslims were "two nations" with irreconcilable differences. The Two-Nation Theory would reshape the subcontinent.

On August 8, 1942, at the Bombay session of the All-India Congress Committee, Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement with the call "Do or Die" — either free India or die trying. The British responded with massive repression: the entire Congress leadership was arrested within hours, Gandhi was imprisoned in the Aga Khan Palace. But leaderless, the movement erupted across India — parallel governments were formed in Satara and Ballia, railway lines were cut, telegraph wires severed, and police stations attacked. Though suppressed by 1944, the movement demonstrated that British rule had lost all legitimacy.

The Bengal Famine of 1943 killed an estimated 3 million people — not from natural disaster but from war-time policies. Churchill diverted food supplies to the military, refused to allow food imports, and prioritized British war needs. Rice prices skyrocketed, hoarding was rampant, and millions of rural Bengalis starved to death. The famine exposed the moral bankruptcy of colonial rule — a regime that claimed to be civilizing India could not feed its people. Amartya Sen later demonstrated that famines are caused not by food shortage alone but by failures of distribution and entitlement — a lesson drawn directly from 1943 Bengal.

The Indian National Army (INA), formed by Subhas Chandra Bose with Japanese support, had fought to liberate India through armed struggle. After Japan's defeat, the British put INA officers — Shah Nawaz Khan, Prem Kumar Sahgal, and Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon — on trial at Red Fort. The trials backfired spectacularly: Congress leaders defended the accused, public sympathy was overwhelming, and the British were forced to commute the sentences. The INA trials revealed that Indian soldiers' loyalty to the British could no longer be assumed — a critical factor in Britain's decision to leave India.

In February 1946, Indian sailors of the Royal Indian Navy mutinied in Bombay over poor conditions and racial discrimination. The revolt spread to 78 ships and 20 shore establishments across India. Though suppressed, it shattered British confidence in the loyalty of Indian armed forces. In March, the Cabinet Mission arrived in India proposing a three-tier federal structure to keep India united. While initially accepted, negotiations collapsed over the grouping of provinces. Jinnah called for "Direct Action Day" on August 16, 1946, leading to the Great Calcutta Killings and communal violence that made Partition increasingly inevitable.

Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, arrived in March 1947 and advanced the independence date from June 1948 to August 1947. The Mountbatten Plan (June 3, 1947) partitioned British India into India and Pakistan. Cyril Radcliffe, who had never visited India, drew the boundary lines in five weeks. On August 14-15, 1947, two nations were born. Nehru's "Tryst with Destiny" speech marked India's independence, but Partition triggered the largest mass migration in history — 15 million displaced, an estimated 1-2 million killed in communal violence. Freedom came, but at a terrible cost.
