✦
Mangal Pandey's rebellion on March 29, 1857, was the spark. Though he was hanged, his act of defiance became a rallying cry. Within weeks, the Meerut garrison would revolt, marching to Delhi to declare Bahadur Shah Zafar as Emperor. The 'cartridge controversy' exposed how the British had underestimated Indian religious sensibilities - a fatal miscalculation that cost them their sense of invincibility.
